One of my favorite things to do at night is to surf Youtube. You can find all kinds of movies, documentaries, and useless information. But, you can also find useful stuff too.
Take this video I found last night: Warning: Strong language!
In it, some of you favorite foods such as hazelnuts and orange juice, are revealed for the manipulated frankenfoods they are.
Let’s begin with hazelnuts. For those of you who love nutella, that great hazelnut flavor you love is enhanced with chemical compounds. These compounds are used to fool you into thinking you are eating something delicious, when in fact, you are eating something that is not what you think.
By the way, this is what Nutella is really made of:
Sugar, vegetable oil, hazelnuts (13%), cocoa powder (7.4%), non-fat milk solids, emulsifier (soy lecithin), flavor (vanillin)
Not exactly healthy.
Ahh, that refreshing glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. Well, would you still drink that OJ if you knew it was probably sitting in a big vat for over a year and that the people who created CK1 were hire to create a “flavor pack” to enhance that tasteless orange water?
You are probably eating more unused newspapers than you think. Flour and oils in processed foods are being replaced more and more with cellulose, which is unrefined newspaper. It’s a really cheap alternative, although you won’t be seeing that savings in the prices you pay at the supermarket anytime soon.
There is a whole list of products in the video that use cellulose. Now, it is harmless if not indigestible. In fact, the laxative Citrucel uses cellulose. But if you think you aren’t paying for wood pulp, think again folks.
Like Japanese food? That wasabi you are eating is horse radish, mustard and food coloring. That california roll-made from white fish slurry, and it contains wheat gluten to boot.
There is more to the video, but you get the picture. It stands to reason we can do better.
I am not posting this to scare or disgust you. I am posting this to make you aware of what you are putting in your body. I am not a health nut by any means, but if you want to avoid frankenfoods, eat the real thing, like real fruit and veggies. Buy organic whenever possible.
So the next time you are enjoying that Nutella on toast and OJ, just be aware.
